Alonso Cueto is a Peruvian writer whose work has been translated into sixteen languages. He is the author of novels, short stories, essays and a children’s book. He received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation grant (2002-2003), and was awarded the Anna Seghers prize (Berlin, 2000). He also won the Herralde novel prize (Barcelona, 2005), and the second prize in the Premio Iberoamericano Planeta-Casa de America, 2007. His novel Grandes miradas was made into a movie by Francisco Lombardi (with the title Mariposa Negra). The movie won the Glauber Rocha award for the best Latin American movie in the Montreal festival. Frank Wynne´s translation of Cueto’s novel The Blue Hour, published by Random House, won the Valle Inclán prize given by the British Society of Authors in February 2014. Two new movies (La Hora Azul and Magallanes) based on his novels are currently in final production. Cueto is a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. His latest novel is La pasajera (2015).

CUNY: The 25th Conference on Spanish in the United States/ 10th Conference on Spanish in Contact with Other Languages

From the organizers:

Founded in 1980, the Spanish in the US Conference brings together researchers from various disciplines – such as linguistics, sociology, anthropology, education, and legal studies – investigating a wide range of topics related to Spanish and Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. Since 1991, it has been held in conjunction with the Spanish in Contact with Other Languages Conference. The conference has been held in New York only once before, at Hunter College in 1983. Its presence at CCNY this year highlights The City College’s commitment to and recognition of linguistic and ethnic diversity, as well as the importance of Spanish as the language of the most represented ethnic group in New York City and in the United States.

This four-day conference will feature 121 presentations on panels with scholars from the United States and abroad. There will be four keynote addresses (one each day): Dr. Ricardo Otheguy (The Graduate Center – CUNY), Dr. Carol Klee (University of Minnesota), Dr. Kim Potowski (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Dr. J. César Félix-Brasdefer (Indiana University Bloomington).

The two conference organizers are Dr. Edwin M. Lamboy, Associate Professor of Secondary Spanish Education and Spanish and Chair of the Secondary Education Department, and Dr. Laura Callahan, Professor of Hispanic Linguistics in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Sponsors include President Lisa S. Coico, the School of Education, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Division of Humanities & the Arts, the Simon H. Rifkind Center for the Humanities & the Arts, the Center for Worker Education, the Ph.D. Program in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages at The Graduate Center – CUNY, and the Cervantes Institute.

CUNY: J. J. Armas Marcelo-“Mario Vargas Llosa: una vida de novela”

As the inauguration of the seminar ¿Cómo leer a Mario Vargas Llosa?, City College’s Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa along with the Colonial Latin American Review present a lecture by J.J. Armas Marcelo: “Mario Vargas Llosa: una vida de novela”

The event will take place in Shepard Hall, Room 95, at the City College of New York, CUNY.

From the event organizers: “J.J. Armas Marcelo is the General Director of the Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa in Madrid. A columnist, essayist and novelist, he is a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish-American Academy of Cádiz and the Academia Peruana de la Lengua. Translated into more than ten languages, Armas Marcelo’s novels have received numerous prizes, among them the International Plaza Janés for Los dioses mismos in 1989 and the International Ciudad de Torrevieja for Casi todas las mujeres in 2003. Armas Marcelo’s writings are marked by a Latin American bent evident in his fiction taking place there or treating the history of the region such La noche que Bolívar traicionó a Miranda. His most recent novel is Réquiem habanero por Fidel (Alfaguara, 2014).”
