From the Instituto Cervantes: “Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651–1695) was a self-taught intellectual who rose to fame as a writer during the Spanish Golden Age, ahead of her time in terms of feminism and independence. A court favorite who was persecuted by the Church, she is considered a major influence on writers of the 20th Century such as Simone de Beauvoir. In this recent translation of some of her best works, Edith Grossman and [HLBLL professor emerita] Electra Arenal will discuss the influence Sor Juana has had on the intellectual evolution of the world.“
This event is free, open to the public, and will offer simultaneous translation.
